Reichsrat von Buhl
The Reichsrat von Buhl estate, in the Palatinate, has been in the family for over 150 years. First established in 1849 by Franz Peter Buhl, the estate was created following the partition of the Jordan Estate into three smaller wineries. Under the management of his son, Franz Armand Buhl, the estate became extremely successful and achieved international praise for its Palatinate Riesling wines, winning awards such as Grand Medal Paris 1867, Grand Medal Philadelphia 1876, Grand Prix Paris 1900, Grand Prix St Louis 1904 and Grand Prix Brussels 1920.
More recently, Reichsrat von Buhl’s wines have been enjoyed by royalty: Forster Ungeheuer Riesling Beerenauslese 1989 was served to accompany Eton Mess, a dessert of meringue, cream and strawberries, at a banquet celebrating The Queen Mother’s Centennial year at The Guildhall, London in June 2000.
The winery, now managed by Stefan Weber, covers approximately 50 hectares of vineyards in the Mittelhardt region, known as a ‘noble wine paradise’. This includes vineyards in the best locations of Forst and Deidesheim.
The estate produces a number of ranges including their single varietal QbAs (Riesling, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rosé and Spätburgunder), classified domain Kabinetts and Spätleses, Grand Cru wines, noble sweet wines, sparkling wines and the Von Buhl range. The Von Buhl range, made predominantly from Riesling, is the result of constant advances in knowledge and technology and is intended to bridge the gap between traditional and modern wines. These dry wines are a perfect accompaniment to fresh light dishes.
The estate motto ‘Shaped by the past – praised by the present – and convinced of the future’ effectively describes what Reichsrat von Buhl achieves in their wines as they build on years of tradition and knowledge, whilst making wines in a modern style.
