Germany once again wowed the panel. It was the only country where more than 20% of the wines received either a
Gold or Silver medal.

I am not sure at what point exactly during my first ever trip to Germany I realised just what I had been missing
out on […] Maybe it was when sampling yet another fabulous wine of the region.

I have visited the Saar several times and met the leading winemakers. I have come away astounded by the overall quality
of this little-known, often misunderstood region, convinced it is producing some of the world’s greatest yet least-appreciated
whites.
William Echikson, Wall Street Journal Europe, 18 November 2005
A stunning Renaissance is now well underway…sales of German wine priced above £6 have grown dramatically…British consumers

RETAIL PROMOTIONS: CHRISTMAS WINE PROMOTIONS
In a bid to encourage sales of German wines at Christmas, Wines of Germany approached independent wine merchants to support German wine promotions in store this Christmas. A number of retailers expressed an interest and submitted proposals in a bid to receive financial support for their Christmas activities.
Wines of Germany decided to support promotions with Weavers of Nottingham, Connolly’s Wine Merchants and Thos Peatling Fine Wines.
A total of 234 wines were involved in the various promotions either via sampling, as a feature in a mailing or highlighted in displays within stores. The wines included were from seven different German wine growing regions and covered a range of prices from £3.82 to £44.55.
All the retailers reported an increase in sales of German wine over this period, with Weaver’s of Nottingham reporting a 150% rise in sales compared with the same period in 2004 and Connolly’s a 220% rise (average sales from Jan. to Nov. 9 cases, in Dec. 29 cases). The average sales increase across all activities was 133%.
