Ernst Loosen
Decanter Man of the Year 2005
Charismatic winemaker Ernst Loosen of Weingut Dr Loosen has recently been voted Decanter Magazine's 'Man of the Year 2005'. This award recognises the enormous contribution that Ernst has made to the world of wine and particularly the central role he has played in putting German Riesling back on the world map.
Since taking over the family winery in the Mosel two decades ago, Ernst Loosen has rapidly risen to become one of Germany's brightest stars. Originally studying Archaeology at University of Mainz, he left his studies to take up winemaking after a family illness jeopardised the future of the Loosen Winery. Now his wines are internationally acclaimed and he has a wide fan-base around the world.
Jancis Robinson MW, the first lady of wine, says "Ernie Loosen has single-handedly put German wine on the world stage and in the 21st century. He has done it by a mixture of irreverence, tireless travelling and an uncompromising quest for quality."
