Ernst Loosen
Archaeologist turned wine maker, Ernst Loosen, took over his family vineyards in the Mosel in the 1980's. He is now thought of as one of the pioneers of the rise in popularity of Riesling in the UK and was named "Winemaker of the Year 2001" by Gault Millau, the who's who in German winemaking as well as Decanter Man of the Year 2005 & IWSC’s White Winemaker of the Year 2005.
Ernst is a forward thinker and an innovator. He predicted the Riesling renaissance that would sweep the world, and guess what happened. The Riesling Revival is truly upon us and German Riesling has made a phenomenal comeback across the world.
Since taking over his family run estate in 1987, Ernie has changed the face of wine production on his Mosel and Pfalz-based estates. He believes in traditional practices with a contemporary twist. He has abandoned chemical fertilisers and much modern day technology to produce a 'natural' wine. Due to his deep-seated understanding of Riesling he is now also a sought out consultant for Riesling producers worldwide.
Ernst Loosen is a great pioneer for Riesling worldwide with his wines selling in approximately 50 countries. His ultimate aim is to produce Rieslings that, according to his UK importer, Siegel Wine Agencies, "proudly proclaim their Mosel and Pfalz roots and convey the unique terroir of his top-class vineyard sites."
