Balthasar Ress
Balthasar Ress was originally founded in 1870 by a Rheingau hotelier of the same name. Since that time, the estate has remained under family control and is currently run by the fourth and fifth generation - father and son Stefan and Christian Ress. Consistently high standards of performance and reliability are what the family consider to be hallmarks of the estate and the wines have a huge following across the globe.
Balthasar Ress currently cultivates a total of 40 hectares in Hattenheim and several other Rheingau communities. The soil composition in the winery’s different vineyards varies greatly and includes loess, loess-loam, slate and quartzite. This, along with the unique micro climates, is responsible for the wide range of styles of wine produced. The estates top vineyard sites include: Rüdesheimer Berg Rotland, Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg; Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen and Erbacher Marcobrunn.
Riesling dominates the plantings with around 91%. The remainder is made up of Pinot Noir and a small amount of other grape varieties. All wines are estate bottled and, as members of the VDP, the strictest standards are adhered to. Balthasar Ress has an extensive range of wines from the crisp dry Riesling trocken ‘Von Unserm’ to rich, luscious Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese wines which are only produced in exceptional years. The ‘Von Unserm’ wine, heralded as one of the best in the collection, is a cuvée from the estates’ most important vineyard sites. The grapes are carefully selected to complement each other and are representative of the estate as a whole.
Balthasar Ress wines are available in the UK from Berkmann Wine Cellars, www.berkmann.co.uk.
