International Wine Challenge, Decanter World Wine Awards and International Wine and Spirit Competition 2007 results .
Last year’s International Wine Challenge (IWC) , Decanter World Wine Awards and International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) saw German wines pick up a number of well deserved trophies, medals and commendations.
With 9,000 entries, the IWC is one of the biggest blind tastings in the world. The whole tasting is conducted over a period of just two weeks although preparations take place all year round. A judging panel of 465 winemakers, merchants and writers took part this year including names such as Oz Clarke, Jancis Robinson and Wines of Germany’s very own Anna Noble. 1,500 wines were tasted daily and each scored out of 100. Wines scoring above 85 points were deemed medal worthy. The gold medal winning wines were then re-tasted blind by the chairman against others in the same category and the best of the best considered for a trophy. Germany scooped 14 gold, 29 silver and 43 bronze medals and 65 commendations.
The trophy winners were:
Sweet German Trophy – Mosel Trophy
2005 Laurentiuslay Riesling Beerenauslese, Reh Kendermann
German Botrytis Trophy
2005 Eschendorfer Lump Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese, Weingut Horst Sauer
German White Trophy – Dry German Riesling Trophy
2005 Würzburger Stein Riesling trocken Grosses Gewächs, Weingut Juliusspital

The Decanter World Wine Awards are judged with a focus on regional style and the influence of terroir. The judges are therefore chosen for their thorough understanding of regional style, crucial for recognising outstanding quality. The wines are judged in two price brackets, under and over £10, in order that the awards do not lose sight of their primary purpose, which is to provide practical recommendations for those who buy and enjoy wine. Trophies are awarded following a taste-off of the gold medal winning wines from each region. German wines were awarded a fantastic 8 gold, 32 silver and 19 bronze medals and 30 commendations.
Trophies went to:
Regional Germany Sweet Over £10 Trophy
2005 Walsheim Riesling Beerenauslese, Karl Pfaffmann, Pfalz
Regional Germany White Single Varietal Over £10 Trophy
2005 Sommerhäuser Steinbach Silvaner Spätlese Trocken, Weingut Felshof, Franken

The IWSC was founded in 1969 and is the ‘premier competition of its kind in the world’. Its aim is to promote the quality and excellence of the world's best wines, spirits and liqueurs. This standard is achieved through a rigorous two-stage judging process of professional blind tasting and detailed technical (chemical and microbiological) analysis that takes place at the competition's headquarters in Surrey, UK. To ensure perfect conditions, the premises include temperature-controlled cellars, a fully equipped independent laboratory for technical analysis, and three dedicated tasting rooms.
The IWSC medals and trophies are the most prestigious honours awarded in the trade, representing the best of the best in the world of wine and spirits.
Entries are judged in award categories divided by variety, region and vintage. Provided the required minimum score is reached gold, silver and bronze awards are given in each tasting category. Products with the highest mark will be awarded "Best in Class" and are re-tasted for national and international trophies. Trophies will be announced at the awards dinner on 6 November 2007.
