Busy times for Wines of Germany

30 September 2008

With the entire wine industry back from their summer holidays, autumn is off to the usual busy start with harvest already well under way in Germany. We’ve not been resting on our laurels in the UK however – September has seen a flurry of activity across the country for the wine trade and the Wines of Germany team have been in the thick of the action as always! From glamorous awards ceremonies at some of London’s most exclusive hotels to early mornings, sampling to consumers in rain soaked Manchester, we’ve been a busy bunch…

Following on from our successful summer sampling campaign, September saw Lucy hit the road, exhibiting at the Tesco Wine Club Fairs in Manchester and London. In Manchester, some consumers approached the wines with nervous trepidation, but they were soon “mad fer it”… In London, the wines were very well received; some particularly well-informed consumers spoke of a “real renaissance for German wines” which was great to hear! The wide range of wines on offer – from the bone dry Palatium Pinot Blanc to the uber-fruity Grans Fassian Trittenheimer Spätlese – ensured there was a wine for every taste, with many a happy (and somewhat merry) customer at the end of the fair…

In rather more glamorous surroundings, Natalie lived the high life (for a few hours at least) at a private food and wine pairing lunch at the Krug Room at The Dorchester on Friday 12 September. She sampled a delicious six-course lunch, with each course specially paired with a different German wine. Some particular highlights were turbot and truffled leeks served with a 2007 Kruger-Rumpf Pinot Blanc, and a spectacular dish of Wagyu beef, oxtail ravioli and white truffles expertly paired with a 2004 Dr Heger Pinot Noir. It’s all part of the job for Wines of Germany – of course we’re not jealous…

Alicia has been out and about in the trade a fair bit too recently: attending the IWC awards dinner with Lucy and engineering a quick chat and photo opportunity with international football star and winemaker, David Ginola!! Every inch the smooth Frenchman… Then last week she fitted in a flying visit to the Wines of Chile generic tasting to check out the Riesling competition. Not bad…not bad at all.

And that’s just September! October and November look set to be another busy couple of months, as we fly the flag for Germany at the Wine Show in Islington, the Square Meal Tasting at Vinopolis in Borough, and we continue our series of sommelier breakfasts – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg! The next thing you know it’ll be Christmas…
