The Best of Riesling - over for another two years18 August 2008
Blog 18 August 2008 – Sophie Judges at the biannual Best of Riesling Competition are only just recovering, having tasted a massive 1,937 different wines from 10 different countries in just two days. The event, organised with typical German precision by Rhineland-Pfalz, was held in Bingen, Germany from 21st – 22nd July. It proved to be a huge success, with 160 judges coming from all over the world. The UK was well represented by sommeliers Walter Speller and Christine Parkinson and wine writers Natasha Hughes, Margaret Rand, Giles MacDonogh, Charles Metcalfe and Tom Cannavan. The wines were divided into categories Dry, Medium Dry, Sweet and Fruity, and Noble Sweet, along with a category for the Best Riesling Collection. Winners best known to the UK market were Max Ferd Richter from the Mosel, who came top in the Fruity & Sweet category and Horst Sauer from Franken who came second in the Noble Sweet category. The competition attracted wine entries from all over the world making this a truly international affair. The Best of the New World category was won by Chateau Ste. Michelle with its excellent 2007 Chateau Ste. Michelle Dry Riesling. The next Best of Riesling competition takes place in 2010 and there is not doubt it will continue to grow in size and international acclaim!
