Unlike many of Germany’s wineries, Weiser-Künstler is not an estate steeped in history. It does, however, remain true to the values and methods of traditional German wine production. The winery was established just two years ago in 2005 by Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler. Together they discovered a vineyard, which had been lying fallow for two years, in the steeply terraced slopes of the Mosel valley. It was a vineyard in the highly classified site of “Enkircher Ellergrub” near Traben-Trabach. They decided to re-cultivate this vineyard and produced their first vintage in 2005.
Today, the partnership of Weiser and Künstler, combines a passion for Mosel Riesling with impressive wine making credentials. As a trained and qualified wine-maker, Konstantin Weiser is in charge of the wine cellars, whilst Alexandra Künstler focuses on the management of the estate. This does not stop them getting ‘stuck in’ in the vineyard. They see their input as key to the development of grape from vine to wine.
Weiser-Künstler believes in the unique character and the potential of un-grafted vines in their original sites. In order to realise further the potential of their vines, the grapes are also all hand-picked.
In 2006, two further vineyards were included in the estate, increasing the acreage of the winery. They now have 2.5 ha under vine on the top sites of the steep banks of the Mosel.
The wines of Weiser-Künstler are exclusively produced from Riesling grapes and the range of wines covers all levels of the classical German quality hierarchy. The focus lies on the production of wines with residual sweetness, some of which are produced with the use of botrytis. The collection, however, is perfectly complemented by a range of dry and off-dry wines.
From the crisp Kabinett to the very smooth Beerenauslese, all of their wines have a fine minerality, are particularly elegant and express subtle fruit flavours. The wines are available in the UK from:
