Manfred Prüm on his wine estate

JJ Prüm wine estate
J.J. Prüm
J.J. Prüm estate wines from the Mosel are renowned the world over as some of the best wines from Germany. Their reputation dates back to 1911 when the estate was founded by Sebastian Alois. The methods of winemaking employed by Alois are still used today by Manfred Prüm, his grandson, who says he has tinkered very little with the formula his grandfather, and subsequently his father, employed for success:
"While I have modernised some things during the time I have run the estate, I haven't made any fundamental changes," says Manfred. "Instead, I have simply tried to refine the wine style which my father developed.”
The production of this wine style involves taking calculated risks; the estate is particularly well known for its extremely late harvests. In 1981, the harvest was still not finished on 9 November yet resulted in wines of superb quality. The estate’s wines are characterised by their purity of fruit as well as by their distinctive mineral character, and are known for their longevity and slow development. From the inimitably light Kabinett to the rich and harmonious Spätlese, to the succulent Auslese and the noble late harvest wines, this producer makes some of the most exceptional and unforgettable wines in Germany.
J.J Prüm wines are available from Justerini & Brooks, OW Loeb and Luvians in Scotland and prices retail at approximately £10 a bottle.
